There is a creator. The Creator creates a hessian figure, rough and raw; a blank canvas. Help the creator to teach the his creation how to move and walk. The figure can be manipulated, twisted, morphed and shaped into anything that the you and the Creator want them to be. But how will it end? Join in this participatory dance event to find out.

Adam Gain is part of the James Wilton Dance Company, and Rosanna Wallis Gain is part of Joss Arnott Dance.

Adam likes to jump and slide and turn upside down. He also enjoys catching flies and cracking his bones.
Rosanna loves drinking tea by the pot full, loves the sea (listening to it, swimming in it and chasing it) and she also loves fruitcake.

Ruby and Jackson get the surprise of their lives when they discover a Thing living at the bottom of their gardens. But Thing is cute, and funny, even if sometimes when he’s upset he gets a bit ARRGHH! And that’s when the trouble starts. Like the time he goes to a pool party, and Ruby and Jackson find themselves face to face with an enormous inflatable monster!

Karen McCombie is the bestselling author of numerous children’s and teenage books, including the series Ally’s World, Stella Etc, Indie Kidd and novels An Urgent Message of Wowness and The Raspberry Rules. Before becoming an author she worked for teen magazines such as J17 andSugar.

Originally from Scotland, she lives in London with her husband, young daughter and assorted cats, who all give her inspiration for her books, whether they like it or not.

Arthur Rigby & the Baskervylles are an 8-piece Orchestral Pop band, based in Leeds. The sound the band creates is a genuinely beautiful mixing pot of lush orchestrations, poetic lyrics, romantic melodies and powerful energy.

The music is the invention of front man and guitarist Benjamin, scoring songs for violins, piano, bass, trumpet, trombone, Saxophone and flute. Originally a 2-piece, with drummer Alex joining Benjamin, the Leeds based duo used orchestral backing arranged on laptops with samples and programming.

There has been some leaping around at Curiosity Corner since Matthew Robins agreed to come to Just So, I can tell your. Our love for him knows no bounds.

While you are asleep at night Matthew is awake drawing pictures of crocodiles and cutting bits out of Barbra Streisand records to make her sing his name. He has also recently started making robots out of paper and cardboard soap operas.

When he is on-stage with his band, The Times noted “Robinsʼs music is in the indie-folk vein. Peppered with pop inflections, the tunes slip easily between tempos that vary from klezmer-like jauntiness to a lilting waltz. The tales they convey are odd slivers of surreal whimsy.”

Combining music, live animation, shadow puppetry, stories about foxes, audience craft-participation, and made-up games, Matthew has been touring his live show around the country for the last five years, performing at comedy clubs, museums, art galleries, the Royal College of Surgeons, nightclubs and both Tate Modern and Britain, as well as The National Theatre, The Barbican, The Roundhouse, The Little Angel Theatre, The Traverse in Edinburgh and the Waterfront in Belfast.

Matthew is now turning these live stage-animations into a series of short films and music videos, with his most recent projects including commissions from Dumbworld and The Barbican, and a short film for Opera North inspired by Wagnerʼs Mein Lieber Schwan.

Inspired by his up-bringing in the West Country living by the sea, and narrowly avoiding death as his first school slipped down a mine, Matthewʼs stories and songs are about animals, death, monsters, the ocean and love. When he wasnʼt outside looking for insects or sharks washed up beyond the high-tide line Matthew was at home watching old American science fiction b-movies, black and white musicals and Sesame Street. Now he tries to make his own versions out of cardboard and minor chords. After watching Matthewʼs recent Barbican Christmas show The Guardian wrote, “The whole thing feels like watching a silent movie in which every aspect has been created by a wayward child genius.”

Last Christmas Matthew was invited to make shadow puppet sequences for the National Theatreʼs new production of Beauty and the Beast, directed by Katie Mitchell. Michael Billington in The Guardian noted Matthewʼs work had “something of the deft wit of Picasso sketches.”

Matthew is currently working on another new show for the National Theatre, an untitled musical with music and lyrics by Tori Amos.

Last year Matthew released his first album, Noahʼs Ark – Matthew Robins live, and is currently working on a new one, I am a Robot, a collection of songs written and recorded over the last ten years, as well as new episodes from his cult shadow series, The Death of Flyboy.

“What drives his miniaturist universe is the romance of friendship and, as a corollary, an underlying longing to belong. Itʼs a place of boyhood crushes, loneliness and gentle obsessions that contain an implied tolerance for taking people as they are.”
The Times

Just before the midnight feast begins (at about, oh, 12 minutes to midnight), prepare to be thrilled as Christopher Edge introduces the electrifying adventures of Penelope Treadwell.

Penelope Tredwell is the feisty thirteen-year-old orphan heiress of the bestselling magazine, The Penny Dreadful. Her masterly tales of the macabre are gripping Victorian Britain, even if no one knows she’s the real author. One day a letter she receives from the governor of the notorious Bedlam madhouse plunges her into an adventure more terrifying than anything she ever imagined…

A thriller with a fast-paced cinematic style, Twelve Minutes to Midnight is an electrifying story from an exciting new author.

You can read the first chapter now:

Christopher Edge is the author of Twelve Minutes to Midnight. He grew up in Manchester where he spent most of his childhood in the local library dreaming up stories, but now lives in Gloucestershire where he spends most of his time in the local library dreaming up stories. Before becoming a writer, he worked as an English teacher, editor and publisher – any job that let him keep a book close to hand. When not writing, he also works as a freelance publisher and education consultant and has written publications about encouraging children to read.

The Easter hols, and lots of foraging around in the woods is making us pine for the Wild Things area at the festival. Bugs and birds, dens and survival, step into Wild Things to get even closer to nature. Warning: you will emerge with twigs in your hair.

Are you ready to join your Just So Tribe? Will you be in the parliament of owls, one of the crash of rhinos, or part of the flutter of butterflies? Every festival family will be randomly selected to be part of one of the Just So Tribes (you’ll receive an email nearer the time to tell you which one you are in).

There will be lots of marvellous activities over the weekend. Create your animal mask at the masked menagerie with those clever chaps from Teatro-Saurus, learn your animal’s tune or beat, and bring it all together to march with your tribe and round off the festival in style at the whooping, screeching thing that is the wild rumpus parade. We’re ever so grateful to National Geographic Kids for supporting the Just So Tribes.

Our lovely, twiggy bushcraft experts will, of course, be teaching you all you need to know to survive in the woods, including bug hunting, den building, foraging for food and campfire building. All hail Ranger Dan!

Get messy, be creative: join us amongst the trees to have some fun with clay. All you need is a tiny little bit of imagination. We’ll be bringing out the spirit and character of the trees by creating, or perhaps finding, faces and creatures for them. Is your tree happy or sad, fierce or friendly, does he sneer, sneeze or snort? We’ll be thinking about our own facial features and expressions whilst using clay, found objects and woodland materials to create temporary art on some of the trees. Big thanks go to Barefoot Ceramics.

Deep in Wild Things, an adventure awaits. Join the explorer lost in Amazon jungle and face real dangers and decisions. Your choices will determine your fate. Will you survive your encounters with piranhas, tarantulas, mosquitoes, monkeys, and jaguars? Or will you be forced to return home early? Only you can decide how to survive. Thanks go to Abrams and Chronicle.

A piano amidst the woods, trumpets hanging from the trees. Come and make sweet (!) music in the sound garden. If you’re struggling to find it, just follow the racket!

As dusk approaches, and the sun goes down, gather round the campfire for songs and stories. Stories will grow darker as the night does. Acoustic music and tall tales will weave their magic in this special night time spot.

Have you seen the sunshine?! We’re all in a frenzy of summers-coming excitement and trying to persuade ourselves that it’s warm enough to dust off the flip flops (it isn’t). You’re clearly feeling the same, as festival tickets are flying out, hoorah! We’re daydreaming about nights under starry skies, and where better to enjoy them than in some of our really rather gorgeous boutique camping. We’re feeling quite cross that we won’t be staying in it ourselves!
Boutique Camping

We are delighted to welcome back the lovely yurts from our friends at Yurt Events – available for you to hire for Just So. These were VERY popular last year, and so if you would like your very own yurt, fully furnished to a high standard awaiting your arrival at Just So, then get in touch with Fred and Kitty to make a booking

Wild Compass are doing something a bit different. They are offering the chance to stay in a gypsy wagon or airstream or tipi. But these aren’t just any old glamping boudoirs, these are the coolest pads in the countryside. Each one is themed and decorated for comfort and lots and lots of fun. Click here to or visit the Wild Compass website to find out more about Hope the Gypsy Caravan, Flying Cloud the Airstream, Emperor the huge emperor tent (complete with chandeliers), and Axel the Tipi.

Campervans!

Campervan space is now VERY limited. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are planning to bring your camper and you haven’t told us yet, and book your tickets pronto if you want to come to the festival with a campervan and haven’t booked yet.

There is no additional charge for campervans. Please email hello@justsofestival.org.uk or phone 01625 410 885 to let us know. The same applies to trailer tents. Caravans are not permitted.

Campervan camping is separate from tented camping. If, however, you have friends who want to camp in tents next to your camper, please get in touch and we’ll see what we can do. We don’t have any fancy electricity or water hookups!

Trolley Hire

The smaller members of team Just So will certainly be travelling by trolley this year, especially as dusk falls and little legs get weary. Trolley Tots will be hiring trolleys out to festival goers. Click here to find out more, and how to reserve a trolley.

Arriving, parking and leaving

How do we get there?

Festival Address: Rode Hall Estate, Church Lane, Scholar Green, Stoke-on-Trent ST7 3QP. We’ll be updating this page with more information about which entrance to use nearer to the festival, so do keep checking back.

If you are getting close, follow the signs!

When can we arrive?

The car park will open at 2pm on Friday 17th August. The gates into the festival will open at 2pm. Please do not arrive any earlier than this as we can’t let you in and you will be asked to move on, so could start your festival experience by driving round in circles while you wait!

Day ticket holders are allowed to stay at the festival from 9am until late (as long as they don’t stay over), and the car park will open at 9am for day ticket holders on Saturday and Sunday.

When do we have to leave?

Campers are welcome to stay on site until 11am on Monday 22nd August, but we do ask that you are packed up and ready to hit the road by then.

Day ticket holders are allowed to stay at the festival from 9am until late (as long as they don’t stay over), and the car park will open at 9am for day ticket holders on Saturday and Sunday. Nobody is permitted to sleep in the car park, in a tent, car, campervan or caravan.

What will happen when we arrive?

**In 2012, you will be able to drop your camping gear off by the camping areas before parking up if you arrive on Friday… more on this soon!***

On arrival our stewards will direct you to a parking spot. Your ticket entitles you to free parking for the duration of the festival. Vehicles are left at your own risk. If you require a disabled parking spot please let us know in advance. There will be no vehicles allowed past the car park and into the festival site.

Tickets will be exchanged for wristbands on arrival. Please visit the wristband exchange at the festival entrance before trying to enter the site. Parents, please write your mobile telephone number on your children’s wristbands straight away. There is good mobile phone coverage on site (see below for more info on our lost child policy).

Please keep your wristbands on for the duration of the festival, as we may ask to check them at anytime. Once you have your wristbands you will be able to come and go from the site as you please.

Can we bring our campervan or caravan?

No caravans are permitted, and only campervans and trailer tents who have arranged entry with us when booking tickets will be allowed in.

Are cars allowed into the festival site?

**In 2012, you will be able to drop your camping gear off by the camping areas before parking up if you arrive on Friday… more on this soon!***

Vehicle movement is resticted on site throughout the festival, to keep all festival-goers, especially the small ones, safe.

Can we buy tickets at the gate?

First things first, if you are coming, you need to have booked in advance, and bring your tickets with you. There will be no tickets for sale at the gate so if you turn up without booking you will be turned away.

Camping

Where can we camp?

In 2012, camping will be in the beautiful parkland of the Rode Estate. If you wish to camp with friends please try and arrive together or the first to arrive can head for the biggest space and save room for friends.

Can we park near our tent?

You will not be able to park your car next to your tent. Campers who arrive on Friday will be able to drop their camping gear near the camping areas before parking up. Vehicle movement is restricted on site throughout the festival, to keep all festival-goers, especially the small ones, safe.

We are bringing a campervan, can our friends camp with us?

If families in tents want to camp with families in campervans that’s fine they can go in the campervan field but please pitch your tents sensibly and keep an eye on your children in case of moving vehicles.

Are we allowed campfires?

We absolutely love campfires, however we need to restrict them to the main campfire circle – our lovely friends at the Cheshire fire service have been very very clear on this! There are no fires allowed anywhere else on site.

Getting around at the festival

Do we need to wear wristbands?

Tickets will be exchanged for wristbands on arrival. Please visit the wristband exchange at the festival entrance before trying to enter the site. Parents, please write your mobile telephone number on your children’s wristbands straight away. There is good mobile phone coverage on site (see below for more info on our lost child policy).

Please keep your wristbands on for the duration of the festival, as we may ask to check them at anytime. Once you have your wristbands you will be able to come and go from the site as you please.

Is the site accessible for buggies?

The festival site isn’t huge, but might get too much for little legs. Most of the site is directly accessible with pushchairs. There are, however, a number of areas where exciting things are going on, which will be more difficult to manage. We recommend a baby carrier/sling to make sure that you don’t miss out on anything.

Food & drink

What is there to eat and drink?

There is all sorts of yummy food on offer at the festival including wood-fired pizza, organic burgers, fabulous pies, veggie wraps, muesli, cereal or bacon butties for breakfast and lots lots more. There is also a fully licensed bar in the social. You can find out more here.

Can we bring our own food and drink?

You are very welcome to bring your own food and drink to the festival. Do not, however, bring any glass with you at all. Broken glass is very dangerous for kids and for animals who will be using the site and fields after the event. Leave all glass in the car, decant it into plastic bottles or pots or bin it. There are no exceptions.

Can we bring our own alcohol?

You can bring your own alcohol to consume in the camping areas, but again, no glass is allowed and please make sure that you dispose of any cans and their ringpulls very carefully. Please do not bring alcohol out of the camping glades into the activity glades or the social. There is a licensed bar available.

Is there drinking water available?

Water is available from stand pipes around the site – this is drinking water but please don’t drink directly from the taps, bring a water bottle with you. You mustn’t use the stand pipes for washing yourselves or your pots.

Can we cook in the campsites?

Yes, you can cook in the campsites, but any bbq or cooking equipment must be raised off the floor by at least 15cm (6inch) to prevent fires and damage to the grass. The last thing we want is for the site owners not to let us back next year

Where can we wash our pots?

There is a sink area for pot washing in the hard standing area near the camping parkland.

Toilets & showers

Where are the toilets? Will they be horrid?

There are toilets situated around the site and they are marked on the map.

The toilets are not portaloos, but are a mixture of nice clean toilet block buildings and stand alone trailers with flushable loos. If you notice that toilets have run out of loo paper or are getting a bit dirty then please let a steward know.

Are there any showers?

There are shower blocks with lovely hot water, which are marked on the map. If you have tiny tots, please see below for details of baby bathtime.

Babies

Are there nappy-changing facilities?

You can find our lovely nappy-changing tent, with mats, nappies and wipes, in the peekaboo area.

Where can I feed my baby?

You will find the breastfeeding boudoir in the Peekaboo area. A place where mums can relax and breast or bottle feed their babies in relative peace. There will also be plenty of space and high chairs available to feed bigger babies.

Bottle and food warmers can be plugged in and used. We’ll provide a bottle warmer or bring your own.

Can I give my baby a bath anywhere?

Baby bathtime will take place every evening, with baby baths and bubbles. More details on the way…

Festival Programme

How will we know what is on and when?

The first pieces of 2012 programming will be released in the Just So Festival advent calendar, beginning on 1 December

Do we need to pay for any activities at the festival?

Nope. You won’t need to pay anything extra for any activities at the festival.

Do we need to book for any activities?

Most workshop activities do not need to be booked. Just turn up at the start. If the session is already full, you might be asked to come back later. A few workshops do need to be booked. This will be specified in the programme.

To book for a workshop, go to the area where the workshop is being held at 9.30am for morning sessions, or 12.30pm for afternoon sessions and either the workshop leaders or one of our lovely festival volunteers will be there to book you in.

We hope this makes the system as fair as possible and that it will prevent people having to queue for a long time.

Welfare & lost children

What do we do if we lose our child at the festival?

All children will be given a wristband on entry to the festival, with a space for a parent’s mobile telephone number. Please keep your phone with you. You can charge it up in the information office.

We suggest that families with older children make clear plans as a family when they arrive at the festival, with an agreed meeting place if you lose each other. If your children cannot find you, show them what our festival stewards look like so that they know who to approach (they’re the one’s in the daft top hats).

Lost children will be cared for and can play and have fun while they wait for you at the lost child point.

Give your kids the same advice you would if you were anywhere else: don’t go off with strangers or anyone without telling you first.

Do you have first aid provision?

We have St John’s Ambulance first aid provision on site day and night. If you require first aid, please make your way to the first aid point. In an emergency, please alert one of the festival stewards who will radio for a medic to attend. Please do not call 999 as our medics will get to you much more quickly!

Other practicalities

Are there any ATMs on site?

We have ATMs on site so there should be no need to carry large amounts of cash around the festival.

[EXPAND Can we charge our phones?]You will be able to charge your phone in the information office during its opening hours, please bring your own charger.
